As Michigan’s first real snowstorm of the season is upon us, it is a good time to remind folks of the importance of oral health this time of year. Without proper care, oral hygiene can take a hit.
Let’s start with what we know: with the holidays and now Valentine’s Day approaching, we are all bound to have a few extra sweets here and there. Sugary foods are less of a problem to oral heath if proper brushing and flossing are applied, but slacking on hygiene this time of year can cause problems such as toothaches and cavities.
Another problem could occur due to rapid temperature drops in the form of dry mouth. Breathing in cold air can make you dehydrated faster, throwing your entire body off-balance. Furthermore, during winter, cold sores become more common as mouths and lips dry out, so be sure to drink lots of water and wear lip balm if needed.
People with sensitive teeth are probably familiar with how the cold can affect tooth soreness and lead to a lot of discomfort if not addressed. Talk to us about tooth-sensitive toothpaste, and be sure to avoid sugary foods and drinks, as that can exacerbate the problem. A face or mouth covering over your face mask can also be used as a way of fighting off the brisk weather.
We hope you are getting outside and enjoying the snow, but be sure to take care of your oral health during this chilly season! Contact Jaffe Dental Group if you need an appointment.
